Moving from the study of the assimilation of Portuguese models in colonial Brazil, Lucio Costa’s discursive construction comes to envision the legitimation of Brazilian colonial art and architecture as a culmination of the Baroque cycle. Direct corollary of this line of reasoning is the full integration of Brazil in Western civilization and, as a consequence, the recognition of “citizenship rights” for European-based modernism on Brazilian soil. The trips to Portugal which Costa undertakes at the turn of the ‘40s as delegate of the Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional with the aim of investigating the colonial roots of Brazilian architecture will contribute, in a more or less direct way, to the circulation of models and ideas as well as to the activation of professional and intellectual relations between the two sides of the Atlantic.
