Abstract

Now more than ever, borders appear to be a fundamental theme shaping European identity, an opportunity to overcome the traditional view that interpreted them as tools to track differences, an occasion to separate, a device to impose a spatial order. Also in a provo-catively anachronistic way, in fact, we stress how borders should become threshold, osmosis, interface. Borders are a privileged area of creativity, where we can experiment, hybridize and innovate, considering differences to find new growth opportunities (economic and cultural). The Creative Europe of community research programs – especially today, when the emergencies caused by migration flows inexorably lead us to face the fear of what is different and feed distant nationalisms – must reflect on how to break down physical borders and instead construct creative boundaries, which are translated into "fertile bearers" of knowledge.
