Abstract

A reflection on the increase in complexity which has progressively taken over the design disciplines and it is imposing a demand for knowledge which goes beyond and crosses over the conventional limits of design as a discipline. For at least three decades design as a professional discipline has entered a historic phase of structural transformation in its intellectual foundations, testified to by its transition from an empirical practice to a knowledge-intensive one. To adapt to this transition design culture has also opened up to appropriation, adoption and stratification of knowledge derived from other disciplines to give shape to an integrated and multifaceted design praxis. Nevertheless, the general issue of giving form and validity to an interdisciplinary or crossdisciplinary design knowledge, consistent, non-reductive, rigorous in ope- rational terms and applicable, has been only partially taken on board and to an even lesser extent resolved.
