Paolo Caccia Dominioni is well-known for his military career, particularly for having fought on the El Alamein front (November, 1942). Following the war, in 1948, he devoted several years to retrieving the bodies of fallen soldiers from the battlefield and eventually designed the Italian war cemetery and memorial building. He has also written a number of award-winning books, mainly linked to his experiences of war. This contribution focuses on his early work in Cairo as a young engineer graduated from the Politecnico di Milano (in 1922). His early works in Egypt include a number of public and private buildings (such as the Italian Hospital Umberto I and the Tennis Club Tewfikeya), as well as several engineering projects, mainly dams and industrial plants (such as the Gebel Aulia Dam on the White Nile and a factory for cotton ginning at Maghagha (upper Egypt)
