We investigate household mobility characteristics for the city of Milan, based on travel survey data collected by Milan Municipality in 2005. The motivation for this research lies within a larger study to understand the role of some innovational transport measures in reducing car dependency. The investigation demonstrates the relationship between household based mobility characteristics (particularly travel distance and travel time), and how they are influenced by social factors i.e. household size, vehicle ownership and household income. Multivariate regression analysis shows that the household based mobility characteristics have no linear relationship with the three social factors. Whilst these factors are found to clear determinants of daily household PT travel time, distance travelled by private car, and private car travel time, they are less influential on the daily household distance travelled by PT.
