The mechanism of dune geometry development is here analyzed, using experimental data available in literature. By means of dimensional analysis and physical reasoning, a framework of analysis is derived in order to describe the pattern of experimental data. Particularly, while the lower limit of dune heiqht pattern tends correctly to the critical stage for sediment motion, the maximum dune height condition appears to be controlled by the treshold of sediment suspension. Results are favorably compared with those obtained by a recent formula proposed by Van Rijn.

Abstract

The mechanism of dune geometry development is here analyzed, using experimental data available in literature. By means of dimensional analysis and physical reasoning, a framework of analysis is derived in order to describe the pattern of experimental data. Particularly, while the lower limit of dune heiqht pattern tends correctly to the critical stage for sediment motion, the maximum dune height condition appears to be controlled by the treshold of sediment suspension. Results are favorably compared with those obtained by a recent formula proposed by Van Rijn.
