This essay presents the general objective of the project PolimiforKarakorum (among the winners of 2013-2014 Polisocial Award edition): to contribute to progress in scientific research in the field of strategies to harness environmental and cultural heritage in which sustainable tour ism managed by local populations (community-based tourism, CBT) becomes a tool for socio-economic development in settings of poverty, while offering a concrete contribution to harnessing the resources of Pakistan’s northern mountain areas and alleviating the poverty of the local population through a community-based tourism project.
