AC interference is a cause of reinforcement corrosion. Since few data are available, the influence of AC on the localized corrosion on passive carbon steel in concrete is discussed based on tests performed in alkaline solution and in concrete slabs. AC was applied in the range 10–500 A/m2. Results allow stating that AC interference weakens steel passivity, increasing the passive current density, reducing both the passive interval and the [Cl−]/[OH−] molar ratio. Results confirmed that the critical alternate current density is in the range 30–100 A/m2, depending on the level of chlorides present into concrete.

Abstract

AC interference is a cause of reinforcement corrosion. Since few data are available, the influence of AC on the localized corrosion on passive carbon steel in concrete is discussed based on tests performed in alkaline solution and in concrete slabs. AC was applied in the range 10–500 A/m2. Results allow stating that AC interference weakens steel passivity, increasing the passive current density, reducing both the passive interval and the [Cl−]/[OH−] molar ratio. Results confirmed that the critical alternate current density is in the range 30–100 A/m2, depending on the level of chlorides present into concrete.
