A process map for the management of façade retrofit

The goal of this paper is the proposal of a Process Map for building retrofit. Process Mapping is a useful tool to underline the different stages of a process the involved actors the documents produced during each stage and to clarify the Decision Process underlying. In this way it is possible to identify the mutual effects of decisions on different stages of a process. Process Mapping is currently used in business processes in order to enhance productivity. Its diffusion in construction is limited but it could be a useful operation to a better understanding of building processes. A process map can be particularly useful in case of a building retrofit operation as a way to clarify its complexity and multiplicity of phases and to form the basis for IT systems. The scope of this paper is underlining the relevance of a Process Map for the building retrofit of a façade mainly related to residential buildings considering the actors and their roles in the building process. The Mapping Notation to be used is the BPMN (Building Process Map Notation) by BuildingSMART that has proven to be effective and complete. Starting from a literature review the Process Mapping operation will be carried out underlining its usefulness in façade retrofitting and identifying the phases and the actors involved.
