Abstract

Hunger games Milan will host the world Expo in 2015. The theme? Food! Like a global banquet with guests from all over the world, next year fair will showcase food in all its aspects. From cultivation techniques, to traditions and national cousins, the fair will be a tasty kaleidoscope of flavors and dishes, people and countries set on the best dining table of the city. In 2008 after the official nominee to host the event, Milan woke up from a long sleep. The city immediately felt starving for urban transformations and new public spaces. Planners, like kids in a candy shop, had a lot of fun looking for the right areas to transform. The options were many with all those old industrial areas in prime locations, just waiting to be redeveloped. The city planners voracity of public and exhibition spaces triggered new developments, mainly in the north-west part of the city where the hunger for quality spaces was sharper. Milan has eaten its brown-fields, chew them and digest them until they became wonderful, mix-used, modern public spaces. During the digestion though, the city had a couple of stomach aches. Economic crisis first and some typically Italian corruption and bureaucratic issues after, almost ruined the cooking times. Nevertheless the final dish, the new urban transformations, look like a marvelous maccheroni plate with ragu. Crème a la crème of all these interventions is no doubt the newly designed pizza-shape Piazza Garibaldi. Anchored to the city by a series of ramps, bicycle lanes, streets and underground station, bordered by the tallest skyscraper in Italy, the piazza it is now one of the coolest central public spaces in the city.
