According to research on the analysis of mobile phone data in the urban studies, the paper focuses on the potentialities of this new source of information, characterized by a high temporal and spatial resolution, to mapping and visualizing the changing city. The paper compares several representations of urban dynamics in Milan Urban Region, obtained through both conventional data sources and mobile phone data, for discussing about the potential of this approach in providing a new insight on spatial and temporal patterns of the city. These patterns are difficult to intercept through traditional data. The scale of the observed phenomena, the time-dependent variation in urban spaces usages, the capability of describing and mapping recent changes, the need of new form of representations of the city are some of the topics that will be addressed in the discussion.

Abstract
According to research on the analysis of mobile phone data in the urban studies, the paper focuses on the potentialities of this new source of information, characterized by a high temporal and spatial resolution, to mapping and visualizing the changing city. The paper compares several representations of urban dynamics in Milan Urban Region, obtained through both conventional data sources and mobile phone data, for discussing about the potential of this approach in providing a new insight on spatial and temporal patterns of the city. These patterns are difficult to intercept through traditional data. The scale of the observed phenomena, the time-dependent variation in urban spaces usages, the capability of describing and mapping recent changes, the need of new form of representations of the city are some of the topics that will be addressed in the discussion.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
