The paper addresses the issue of representation of women through the media, it is set in a research domain that focuses on the dignity of the female figure and her defence and that is finalised to reflect on the role that Communication Design may take to oppose widespread stereotypical models and to support a process of social criticism by directing people to a more aware interpretation of the reality. In this direction we present two design research works which were intended to investigate the socially-determined relationship between the phenomenon of stereotyping of women's identity and the system of production, distribution and consumption of images through analogical and digital media.

Abstract

The paper addresses the issue of representation of women through the media, it is set in a research domain that focuses on the dignity of the female figure and her defence and that is finalised to reflect on the role that Communication Design may take to oppose widespread stereotypical models and to support a process of social criticism by directing people to a more aware interpretation of the reality. In this direction we present two design research works which were intended to investigate the socially-determined relationship between the phenomenon of stereotyping of women's identity and the system of production, distribution and consumption of images through analogical and digital media.
