Abstract

The paper highlights the benefits, in terms of amplitude resolution, obtained with the insertion of a series lossless inductor between the detector and the first stage of the shaping amplifier, with respect to the traditional direct coupling without the inductor. The optimum impulse response of the shaper amplifier for infinite and finite processing times and for a general configuration of white sources of noise is investigated, together with the corresponding theoretical limits in charge resolution. With a proper choice of the value of the inductor, values of ENC2 up to a factor of 2 better than when the inductor is not present can be achieved
