Hydroplaning, as well known, greatly affects safety since it leads to the loss of contact between tire and road thus preventing the vehicle from responding to control inputs such as steering, braking or accelerating. Sensorized tires developed in recent years proved to be able to detect hydroplaning risk in terms of proximity to the so called hydroplaning speed. Availability of such devices con thus drive to the development control systems able to maintain vehicles’ stability and directionality also in hydroplaning conditions. The paper presents results relevant to the identification of hydroplaning risk through smart tires and describes an experimental campaign focused on the identification of the lateral response of tires under hydroplaning conditions.
