Abstract

Specific algorithms have been developed to assist tumor detection by means of a time-gated fluorescence imaging technique. Suitable procedures based on a piece-wise linear transformation of the histogram were designed to improve, in real time, the quality of the images taken by means of an intensified video camera. Smart optimization criteria were followed for the automatic choice of the enhancement parameters in a wide range of situations, taking care of preserving the interaction with the operator. The effectiveness of the system was extensively tested in the detection of experimental tumors induced in mice. Even in very harsh conditions (in terms of low signal and contrast) the algorithms succeeded in recovering images otherwise useless for diagnostic purposes.
