The results of convergence measurements performed at various sections of the Frejus motorway tunnel are adopted as input data in a back analysis aimed at defining the variation of the average shear strength and viscosity parameters of the rock mass along the tunnel axis. The results of the analysis show that such a type of calibration, if performed during the excavation works, may provide meaningful information about unexpected variations of the mechanical characteristics of the rock mass, and leads to more refined values of the same parameters to be used in the "long term" design of tunnel linings.

Abstract

The results of convergence measurements performed at various sections of the Frejus motorway tunnel are adopted as input data in a back analysis aimed at defining the variation of the average shear strength and viscosity parameters of the rock mass along the tunnel axis. The results of the analysis show that such a type of calibration, if performed during the excavation works, may provide meaningful information about unexpected variations of the mechanical characteristics of the rock mass, and leads to more refined values of the same parameters to be used in the "long term" design of tunnel linings.
