We present a methodology to monitor the state of crack-containing composite structures subjected to time-varying loadings. Adopting a simple test set-up, we focus on slowly varying loading conditions and show that low-cost commercial off-the-shelf MEMS accelerometers can display a noteworthy sensitivity to the length of a growing crack. Abstract

Through comparison with finite element simulations, we also assess the robustness and accuracy of the proposed methodology.
