In the framework of the combustion of natural gas/hydrogen fuel mixtures in diffusive swirl stabilized burners an on going research activity is running at the Combustion Laboratory of the Politecnico of Milano since 2003. In previous works a spontaneous yellow emission has been observed from swirled stabilized flame when burning hydrogen-natural gas fuel mixtures. PIV and LDV characterization of the flow field near the burner exit indicates that by adding H2 the reaction zone moves upstream near the fuel pipe and the fuel jet penetrates more deeply into the recirculated hot products. These observations can support the hypothesis of soot formation in the hot region where CH4 mixes with vitiated air.
