Abstract

The efficiency of a seismic retrofitting technique (Martinez-Rueda) is analysed in the case of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs). Passive control is adopted, by dissipating part of the energy input by the earthquake through friction devices; these are located in the zones where inelastic behaviour is expected. As an example of application a frame, designed by Tsai and Popov in 1988, is analysed; the po¬sitive effect of retrofitting is measured by the reduction in local and global ductility requirements.
