Abstract

Although well consolidated in its vocational character, industrial design is rather young as an academic discipline and a field of research at university level. Moreover, it is just in the year 2004 that the reform of the Italian university system has been fully adopted. The five-year degree course in Design - which formerly represented the only possible path for secondary school leavers requiring a professional education - has today been revised in terms of organisation, subjects and aims. The recent reform has led to the introduction of a number of locally innovative elements, including the articulation of a degree and higher degree (with the traditional five-year course divided into two successive levels ( namely a three-year Degree and a Higher Degree of two years) giving rise to a structure by now referred to as 3+2. Three further years are required to proceed to the award of the Ph.D. degree. The Politecnico di Milano was among the first design schools to start a Ph.D. degree programme in industrial design (1990). Since its origins it has been intended as an intensive programme for advanced studies in design theory, methods, processes and practice. This contribution proposes a reflection on some critical issues stemming from the development of this programme.
