The paper aims to provide concepts, references, and thick descriptions of “mining energy landscapes” in Italy as paradigmatic energy landscapes observed through multiple transitions. First, the current debate on “energy transition” is critically reviewed by referring to a multidisciplinary literature developed in the fields of environmental history, policy analysis, and urban studies. While the historical approach shows the need to reframe “energy transitions” as “additions”, several contributions from the design field show how to engage with the energy topic from a spatial perspective. Secondly, the paper presents some examples of energy landscapes in coastal and inner areas to show the materiality, the spatial impacts, and the interconnected systems of different fossil fuels at multiple scales and in various former mining areas. These include fuel extraction sites, infrastructure, electricity production sites, manufacturing industries and places of consumption. Eventually, the paper reflects on the contribution of such approach to heritage studies currently engaged with the topic of energy transition.
