LA GRANDE VILLA ADRIANA - DESIGNING THE UNESCO BUFFER ZONE

«To build is to collaborate with earth, to put a human mark upon a landscape, modifying it for ever therby; to contribute to that slow transformation which is the very life of the cities» (Marguerite Yourcenar, Mémoires d'Hadrien, 1951); to implant the project in the history of places, as an occasion to foster its evolution, to modify its destiny and thus to fulfill its aims. The proposal intends to enhance the ancient and contemporary documents by reconfiguring the vast area through the construction of a necessary and indelible relationship among the signs and the fragments that connote the urbanized and natural landscape. Landscape is the subject, the instrument and the ultimate objective of the project; it places the extraordinary space of Villa Adriana at the core of a productive and intensely modern life, which integrates the traces that convey the beauty of these places, in the past and today.

VARIUS MULTIPLEX ORBIS TERRARUM MULTIFORMIS “Costruire, significa collaborare con la terra, imprimere il segno dell’uomo su un paesaggio che ne resterà modificato per sempre; contribuire inoltre a quella lenta trasformazione che è la vita stessa delle città” (Marguerite Yourcenar, Mémoires d’Hadrien, 1951); innestare il progetto nella storia dei luoghi, come occasione per assecondarne il fluire, trasformarne i destini e, con ciò, compierne gli intenti. Il progetto, che, nell’intento di valorizzarne i documenti antichi e contemporanei, coinvolge il vasto territorio, vuole costruire una relazione indelebile e necessaria tra segni e frammenti presenti nel paesaggio urbanizzato e naturale. Il paesaggio, soggetto, strumento e fine ultimo del progetto, colloca lo straordinario ambiente di Villa Adriana al centro di una vita produttiva, attiva e intensamente moderna, senza perdere le tracce delle spazialità che, come nell’antichità, ancora oggi comunicano la bellezza di questi luoghi.
